[California Therapists] Knox-Keene Act: Key Benefits and High-Level Additions

What is Knox-Keene, and Why is it Beneficial?

The Knox-Keene Health Care Service Plan Act (also known as simply “Knox-Keene) is a California law that establishes oversight over health plans in the state of California, requiring specific operational, quality, and compliance standards. Its primary goal is to provide protections for patients and providers. Modern Health’s dedication to provider excellence is enhanced through compliance with the Knox-Keene Act.

As part of Modern Health’s commitment to complying with the Knox-Keene Act, all California-licensed therapists are required to sign an addendum to the Provider Agreement as mandated by the California Department of Managed Healthcare. This “California-Addendum” reflects the expanded support for our Knox-Keene-covered members and the providers that treat them.

There are two benefits of this revised agreement:

  • Legal Protections: your Provider Agreement now includes specific legal protections under Knox-Keene, including transparent payment processes and dispute/grievance procedures.
  • Compliance Obligations: your Provider Agreement now documents compliance requirements applicable to Modern Health and providers, including accessibility and language, privacy, and other Knox-Keene requirements.

It should be noted that these are not ongoing updates, but rather the immediate differences between the current version of your Provider Agreement and the California Addendum.
