Why is there a Crisis Risk alert for my client if their answers don’t indicate risk?

The Crisis Risk alert is always flagged whenever a member gets served the ‘Crisis Support Follow-up Questions’, regardless of their responses to those questions.

The member reaches the Crisis Support Follow-up Questions if they either:

  1. Endorse the 9th question on the PHQ9 (experiencing thoughts they would be better off dead, or thoughts of hurting themself in some way); or
  2. Click on the “Crisis Resource” link within their Modern Health account.

The reason that this is flagged to our providers is because when a member endorses Q9 of the PHQ-9, or clicks into Crisis Resource it is an indicator of increased risk of self-harm. This questionnaire helps to further assess the imminence of risk, and to measure intent to act.

Depending on the member's response, some cases will indicate less imminent risk. However, it may not be the case for other clients.

Regardless of the member's responses, we kindly ask that you review the alert with the member and complete a risk assessment as outlined in this article

Please keep in mind that member reactions to receiving crisis resources may vary, especially if they have indicated to you in sessions that they are not at-risk. Please enter the conversation prepared to educate the member on how this alert is triggered and the purpose of it, in case they have concerns.

[For Therapists and Psychiatry + Medication Management providers]

If the member triggered the alert before being matched with you, we will display the alert for your awareness, but you will not be required to resolve it. In these cases you will not see the 'Resolve' link on the Assessment card.
