To optimize computer performance for video sessions:
- restart your computer regularly and close unnecessary applications.
- Install updates from trusted sources to ensure compatibility.
- Ensure audio clarity is prioritized over video; test microphone placement to avoid echoes.
- Use a wired Ethernet connection for better internet speed, aiming for over 384 kbps.
- Develop a backup plan for technical difficulties and communicate it with your client.
In order to ensure a seamless telehealth experience with your clients, we have put together a guide below with suggestions for checking your technology prior to a session.
General Guidance
- Restart your computer every day (or at least every few days) for it to run as efficiently as possible.
- Close any unnecessary programs and applications on your computer. These take away from resources needed for your computer to run efficiently.
- Install recommended updates only from sources you trust, such as Microsoft and Apple. Keeping software up to date will help ensure the performance and compatibility of your computer.
- Locate the volume control on your device. You may need to adjust the volume or mute/unmute your speakers.
- If you can connect to the Internet, but are having trouble joining the video, you can use our recommended Pre-call Tool.
- If you or your client are not able to hear or see each other, your browser might not be allowed to use your camera or microphone.
Audio
Audio clarity is arguably more important than visual clarity when conducting video sessions. Note: The audio should be set so that each person can hear the other well without being so loud that people in adjacent rooms can overhear.
Equipment
Equipment considerations may include:
- Monitor size and quantity. If taking notes during a session, consider your monitor setup. For example, if available 2 monitors may be helpful in separating the client image and your client notes.
- Microphone quality and placement. It's recommended that providers test their microphone (or headphones) to confirm high sound quality. For example, microphones placed next to speakers can result in an echo.
Internet
- Speeds above 384 kbps are recommended for a good video connection (minimum of 128 kbps).
- If possible, try using a wired Ethernet instead of wifi. Ethernet can provide a smoother, more consistent experience.
- Ensure you’re using a password-protected, secure internet connection, not public or unsecured WiFi.
- You can test your internet speed using the test tool here.
Backup Plan
You should develop a backup plan in the event of technical difficulties and communicate it to your client prior to your first telehealth session.
